5.1 Surround Sound Headset

Sharon asks…

What is a good PS3 5.1 surround sound gaming headset?

I Need A PS3 5.1 surround sound gaming headset. One wher i can hear the game and the people talking.

Ryland answers:

Most gaming surround sound systems require special USB drivers (as they connect solely to the USB port). You need one that connects to the optical out for sound, and with a USB adapter allows you to use the microphone.

Ken asks…

Sharkoon SR vs. Sharkoon 5.1 digital true surround sound headset for ps3?

I recently purchased the sharkoon 5.1 surround sound digital headset but i cancelled my order and replaced it with an order for the sharkoon sr. I did this because it was the newer model made by sharkoon and because it had better ratings. What do you guys think? Could you give me some specific details on which one you think is a better headset?

Ryland answers:

They are the same product; the digital just has the ability to add in another headset to the same control box.

Richard asks…

Whats better, a true 5.1 surround sound headset, or a virtual surround sound headset?

Im planning on getting a headset for my pc, mostly for gaming AND watching movies, and I need suggestions on getting a surround sound headset, e.g. Logitech G35 (Dolby virtual 7.1), Razer Barracuda HP-1 (true 5.1). My price range is $130 and below. I will be using my onboard sound card which supports surround sound. Whats the sound quality difference on detecting directionality from a virtual vs true surround?

Suggestions of some of the best and your opinions would be helpful. :)

Ryland answers:

True 5.1 gives a better surround sound experience, because its source material is genuine multi-channel sound. Whereas virtual surround uses sound processing technology to simulate the same effects, but it is to an extent guessing how to modify the sound to make it sound like its 3D.

Robert asks…

5.1 surround sound dts usb headset sample rate?

I’ve just bought a Thermal take shock one 5.1 dts headset, but whenever i try to turn on the dts surround sound from the driver it says my current sample rate does not support dts-ss and i need to adjust it to 48KHz and i have no idea what that means. what do i do? also it’s a usb cable if that helps

Ryland answers:

Well, open up Control Panel and go to Sound.

Then, right-click your sound device, go to Properties and somewhere there, you will see an option to change the Sampling rate.

The sampling rate is how many samples the device can process per second. If you exceed the device’s sampling rate, it will not be able to play it.

Most devices should be able to play 16-bit 44100 Hz.

Best PC gaming surround sound headset?

I’m looking for a PC headset for gaming, it must have at least 5.1 surround sound (7.1 is better), a mic and (obviously) good quality sound. I was thinking about the Razer Megalodon, but that’s a bit too expentive at the moment. Any suggestions for a headset for less than £60? Sound quality is most important for me.

Ryland answers:

You should try the creative headset

Please Help?!?! Could You Recommend me a True 5.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset?

Well i was wondering for any recommendations for a Gaming Headset??
I had a Turtle Beach But…… To cut a long Story Short it Broke!
I was Looking for a Headset for the PS3 and With 8 Speakers 4 in each ear and True 5.1 Surround Sound. The Highest I will pay is 285$ / €200 / £175

Plesase Help?!?! CCould You Recommend me a True 5.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset?

Well i was wondering for any recommendations for a Gaming Headset??

I was Looking for a Headset for the PS3 or an xbox With 8 Speakers 4 in each ear and True 5.1 Surround Sound. The Highest I will pay is 285$ / €200 / £175

Ryland answers:

First of all, you should understand that multispeaker headsets produce a lower quality surround sound than single speaker ones. Converging soundwaves, harmonic distortion and other issues make it less effective at giving you accurate surround sound.

That said, I’d STRONGLY recommend the Turtle Beach PX5. Best sound, most features, totally the way to go.

David asks…

What is better a Surround Sound System or Gaming Headset?

I have a Turtle Beach x11 right now. It sound great, but the thing is I play when my son is sleeping, and if I have the headset on I cant here the baby monitor. So I am thinking about getting a 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System. I just want to know if anyone uses a surround sound system instead of a headset. And if it is as good as a headset or better. Can you still here bomb plants/defuses and footsteps precise.

Thanks in advance

Ryland answers:

If no complain from the people around about the noise, then the sound system is better, i personally don’t like to put on headset on my ears for longer period of time.

5.1 Surround Speaker System Wireless

Thomas asks…

if i have a 7.1 surround sound system, what would happen if the movie was only in 5.1?

im getting a samsung 7.1 channel surround sound system with rear wireless speakers, and i want to know what would happen if the program/movie/blu-ray was only in 5.1 channel surround sound.
Would only 5 of my 7 speakers play?

Thanks for your help

Ryland answers:

Hi brady s….this a yes and no answer….and i say this because it actually depends on what type of dolby “effects” you have on board an amplifier/reciever for it to enable… Downmixed/decoded….i’ll give you an example….dts digital surround is a 5.1-channel audio decoding system from dts inc,now widely used for dvd-video/audio etc etc….it can deliver up to six discrete audio channels….now dts-es (extended sound) and dts neo:6 can generate 6.1 channel surround sound from any matrixed stereo source( eg tv or video) and from 5.1 channel sources….both sources are also compatible with a conventional dts 5.1 channel decoder…..and that is the short version brady!

Mark asks…

Best 5.1 Surround Sound System?

I have about £300 I could stretch to £320 and was looking for a powerful 5.1 surround system for my moderately sized bedroom. It kind of needs HDMI out, Optical In, At least 500W RMS Power and Wireless would be nice.
I have been looking at this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-SC-PT570EB-K-Tallboy-Theatre-System/dp/tech-data/B001UE84JO/ref=de_a_smtd

I really like this one because it has wireless rear speakers and it has all that I want.
Could anyone give me some advice of what one to but and if it is any good.

Cheers

Ryland answers:

Looks like a good deal. I would go with that.
I bought the SA-HT520 a few years back. Still have it now and it sounds as good as new still.
I cant turn it up full as it makes the windows shake and the furniture bounce. The volume goes from -60 to +60. Iv never had into the +s yet. -10 gets the neighbours knocking. -24 is easy listening.
Im guessing this one is the newer model. Panasonic make great speakers. Crystal clear even with the sub woofer on 4. The Ram Discs give excellent quality playback. Mine fits in with all the other panasonic stuff. The Q-Link is so easy to handle.
That seems a fair price too. I may have to update mine now Iv seen the specs on that.

George asks…

What’s the best 5.1 surround sound system?

I am looking to treat myself for christmas and as i have always wanted a surround sound system, i thought why not.
I have a budget of around £750, around $1250
I really want big speakers and has to be to be high quality. Would also be good to be wireless. Will use it for xbox 360 / PS3, music, movies and sports.
I just need advice and some feedback from someone who has a great system. Thanks

Ryland answers:

Wireless speakers have a large degradation of quality, better to wire it. I answered a similar question before. What I reccomended then was:
Receiver: http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/4865.asp $400
Fronts: http://paradigm.com/en/paradigm/fronts-monitor-minimonitor-model-2-4-1-14.paradigm $450
Center: http://paradigm.com/en/paradigm/centers-monitor-cc190-model-3-4-1-6.paradigm $400
Surrounds:http://paradigm.com/en/paradigm/surrounds-monitor-adp190-model-4-4-1-8.paradigm $450
That totals out to about $1300. Paradigm Mini Monitors are what the rolling stones use to mix on, and (In my personal opinion, I own a pair) are some of the greatest bookshelf speakers ever made.

John asks…

What surround system should i buy? To be used with a samsung 40″ LCD TV and using my PS3 as a blu-ray player?

I I would like a decent system however I have doors at either side of the room and i do not want to run wires round these to the rear left and rear right speakers. I have looked in a yamaha digital sound projector which would mean having only one unit at the front and it recreating virtual surround sound, but have also been recommended to use an av receiver to plug my ps3 into in conjunction with a 5.1 system. I have also noticed that with some 5.1 ystems you can get wireless rear speakers, is it possible to use these in conjuction with an av receiver? I have a budget of aproximately £300 – £400 pounds any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ryland answers:

I had the same problem with doors.

I lifted the floorboard in one doorway and ran loudspeaker leads under floor at doorway.

Your budget is a bit tight for decent wireless rear speakers

I think spending it on resonably decent A/V Receiver with Dolby IIx decoding.then hard-wiring speakers, would give better sound.

Sharon asks…

Surround sound system reccomendations please?

I am looking for a good 5.1 surround sound system, i would preferably like a Panasonic amp as my tv and blu-ray player is panasonic so i will be able to use viera link. Since i already have a blu-ray player i wouldn’t like a home cinema system with a dvd/blu-ray player included.
can anyone recommend one for me, or should i buy a panasonic amp and the speakers separately?
and if i should can someone recommend any? and i would prefer wireless speakers and size doesn’t really matter, just quality.
thanks :)
oh, and i would like an amp with more than one optical input, if you can get one
at the moment im looking at this one, i think its quite good:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-SC-PT570EB-K-Tallboy-Theatre-System/dp/B001UE84JO/ref=sr_1_17?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258897153&sr=1-17

Ryland answers:

Panasonic doesn’t make good speakers, compared to companies that specialize in speakers. They don’t make particularly good amps either.

If you want the best sound quality, get a receiver from a company that makes good electronics (Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo) and speakers from a speaker manufacturer (SVS, B&W, Paradigm, Polk).

You didn’t say what your budget is. If you can only spend $500, you may be better off getting an all-in-one system. The ones from Onkyo are better than most.

But if you can spend $1500, get these:

http://www.svsound.com/products-sys-sbs_black.cfm

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002AKKFQM/ref=asc_df_B002AKKFQM967691?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=googlecom09c9-20&linkCode=asn&creative=380341&creativeASIN=B002AKKFQM

Any universal remote will make your system easy to use, no need to stick with Viera.

Nancy asks…

Best surround sound system for me.?

Ok. I’m looking for a 5.1 or better surround sound system that works best. It needs to be able to support a samsung tv, sky+, ps3, desktop g4 Apple mac and macbook air (these don’t have 5.1 cards but still would be nice to have the hooked up).

Also if it had Bluetooth connection (if possible?) then that would be great! All the things I want to connect have it (apart from sky+). Would mean less wires. Would be good to have wireless speakers as well.

Any ideas on any of this? I am a complete beginner in all these matters so don’t know what I’m looking for or if it’s even possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

do i have to have a reciever in order for my 5 surround sound satellite speakers to play?

i bought a discontinued 5.1 sony sa-ve345 surround sound system. the subwoofer has out lets for the speakers but when i hook them up it does not play. i ensure that negatives on negatives etc.but the sub plays fine. do i have to have a reiever in order for the satellite speakers to play? p.s. satellites are not wireless

Ryland answers:

Yes, you need a 5.1 receiver, the sub wires you are attaching are for another purpose, they don’t power the speakers. Check you owner’s manual or look one up online.

Mary asks…

Which 5.1 surround sound package is best for me?

I want to spend about $500 on a surround sound system for my home. I will mainly be using it for XBOX, movies and television. I like the idea of wireless speakers, but I don’t want to give up any quality because of the wireless. I do need a optical port with this surround sound system. Where should I go, and which name/package should I buy?

i’ve listened to an older model of this and the sound is crystal clear. I just couldn’t believe the clarity of these speakers. Maybe it’s cheaper elsewhere, but it comes with your wireless kit and it has an optical port.

5.1 Surround Sound Speakers

Sandy asks…

Can I connent my 5.1 surround sound speakers through my laptop’s HDMI port?

I have a laptop with just one headphone socket, so I can’t play 5.1 surround sounds speakers because I gather you need 3 jacks for that.
I do have a HDMI port on my laptop though, so is it possible to buy an adaptor or something that will let me connect 5.1 surround speakers that require 3 audio jacks into the HDMI port?
Thanks

Ryland answers:

Yes you can
your amp would be able to encode 5.1
then laptop to amp will be 5.1, and that way you get 5.1 through your speakers.
Try play with dts media, the best.

You have to setup your pc in a way that hdmi digital out not just boring stereo.

David asks…

Can I connect 5.1 surround sound speakers for PC to my TV?

I was wondering if I could plug the speakers into the headphone socket on my tv and get decent results… The speakers are PC Line PCL-51001 5.1 Speakers. I don’t want to pay a lot for a high quality tv surround sound system.

Thanks.

Ryland answers:

No, each speaker on a surround surround sound system (or PC) has a seperate wire for each speaker if they are true 5.1 (if it was surround sound your PC would have a number of different coloured 3.5mm jacks.

Thats not to say sound won’t come out of them all. A standard headphone jack on a TV only carries left audio and right audio though. Also, something to remember is 5.1 doesn’t necessarily mean it is surround sound. A lot of the cheap, unbranded surround sound systems you get from places like Argos or Amazon have 5 speakers and a sub but not a Dolby Surround sound decoder built in.

Hope this helps,
Dan

What Kind of Surround Sound Speakers Should I Get For an LCD TV?

What kind o surround sound speakers should I get? I’m looking into buying an LCD TV, about 32 inches. I need speakers for them and i’m asking here if there are any type i should be looking for.

I;m not speaking types of brands like sony but rather compatible types of surround speakers with an LCD TV.

I’ll most likely get 5.1 surround sound speakers…anything i should keep in mind with inputs or are they all they same…?

just go to a store and check them out….they have all the connectors you’ll need.

Are all blu ray players set up to have 5.1 surround sound speakers attached?

I have a blu ray dvd player and would like to buy 5.1 surround sound speakers to go with it. Will it be equipped with decoder to support 5.1 surround sound speakers or not.

Ryland answers:

Not directly. You will need the speakers and some type of surround amplifier/receiver … Not just the speakers. That said, all Blu-ray players have built in 5.1 dolby digital decoders (and many have advanced decoders for 7.1 formats increasingly used on Blu-ray (but not DVD) disks).

Michael asks…

How do i position my 5.1 surround sound speakers?

Totally new to surround sound and am picking up a 5.1 system next week. How do i position all the speakers in my living room? I’m using an hd projector position behind my couch btw

Ryland answers:

Your center channel should be right under or over your TV, front speakers should be equal distance from the TV on each side, rear speakers should be (close to) equal distance on either side of where you will be sitting (your couch) and also pointed towards the TV to keep all the sound travelling to the same general area, and your sub woofer should be positioned on the floor off to the side but still pointing towards where you will be sitting. I have Sony Dar Rd100 5.1 surround sound speakers will the STR DE495P Amplifier will work with these speakers?

I have Sony Dar Rd100 5.1 surround sound speakers only.
I do not have the amp/dvd player which comes with Sony Dar Rd100.
Wondering if the SONY STR DE495P Amplifier will work with these speakers?

Ryland answers:

Generally it’s not a good idea to use speakers that came with an all in one system with a component receiver. The reason for this is that the all in one system speakers are not only usually very low quality but they are usually low impedance as well. Manufacturers design the amps in these all in ones to work with low impedance speakers as amplifiers when so designed will put out more power when used with such speakers. It’s not high quality power though. When designing quality home amplifiers the designers usually design them to work with medium impedance speakers – 8 Ohms. Using low impedance speakers will trip the protection circuit. Another problem is that the subwoofers in all in one systems are usually powered by an amp in the main unit while a component receiver will not have such an amplifier. It is designed to work with a powered, or “active” subwoofer that has a built in amp. The specifications to your Sony Dar Rd100 listed on the net do not list the speaker impedance or state if it is an active subwoofer but it does state that the speakers are “one way” meaning that they contain a single, full range driver – not something that indicates high quality. You’d be far better off to buy a set of quality speakers designed to work with a component receiver. They do not have to be Sonys and, in fact Sony is not known as a manufacturer of high quality speakers. There are many makers of high quality speakers like Klisch, Polk, etc, but if you are budget conscious, Cerwin Vega makes affordable speakers that are superior to mass market speakers made by the likes of Sony.

I’m looking for 5.1 Surround sound speakers that I can plug both my computer and my Xbox 360 into?

I’m looking for 5.1 Surround sound speakers that I can plug both my computer and my Xbox 360 into at the same time. Suggestions?

Ryland answers:

Speakers aren’t ‘surround’. You need an actual surround receiver. If you have that then simply plug into the inputs and select its source (aux) and whatever you plug in will be ‘surround’ to the best of its capabilities. Enjoy!

There should be a volume control in the plugin being used by firefox to play the media you’re viewing.

but I have no idea how to set it up all i am looking at is connectors but don’t know what I need to connect them too. all I have is speakers do I need an additional control unit?

Yes you need a receiver for controlling that speaker system. I’m not familiar with it, but Samsung does make good video products, but their audio is sub-standard. How do you connect a asda 5.1 surround speaker system to a lg led tv?

I can get it working through my DVD player but I can’t get it to work through my lg led tv.

51speakersystem answers:

Just about every tv today has an optical audio output, it is a digital signal with multi channel information. The signal has to be decoded by a processor with Dolby Digital capability. If your ASDA 5.1 system has an optical audio input then you need to connect one end from the tv and the other end to your home theater. Open the manual of your surround sound system and tv, it will provide you the proper direction for the connection. Hope this will help you out.

How do i hook up Logitech 5.1 Surround Speaker System to my Xbox 360 Elite???

Thanks, i wanna play halo 3 with surround sound.

To get true surround sound and not just a wiring nightmare, you don’t hook it up directly. You need a PC and 5.1 Sound card with a digital in to run the system.

What do I need to use a 5.1 surround sound speaker system?

I recent got a 5.1 surround sound speaker system, and the main tower that controls everything is kinda busted to put it simply. What do I need to replace that head unit? Do I need a Home Theater Receiver to manage the different audio sources?

I want to be able to connect my computer, have a radio reciver , CD player, tv and other connections such as that.

The wires are standard speaker cables, with no adapter on the end, merely the stripped wire.

51speakersystem answers:

Yes, you need a A/V receiver.

Donald asks…

What is a good 5.1 surround sound speaker system for around $200?

I have a 32 inch Samsung HDTV. I am using it to play xbox games and Blu-ray movies on my PS3. Is there any good 5.1 speakers that I can buy. I obviously don’t need another dvd player.

51speakersystem answers:

Fdhfdg, please stop posting this scam website of yours, it has no relevance to the question at hand and it’s clear your full of you know what.

To the OP, getting good sound under 200.00 is pretty much impossible. You sacrifice sound quality for saving money. So basically you will be throwing away money on a system that you won’t like, then have to spend more money to upgrade on decent equipment.

A decent subwoofer alone will start at around 400.00 without any speakers. For an entry level system I would look at the Insignia 6.5″ speakers sold at BestBuy but they cost about 80.00/pr so 6 speakers is already 240.00 without the use of a sub at all, then there is the cost of a reciever.

All you can get is a home theater in a box setup and I can’t in good taste recommend any of those for any price.

logitech X-540 5.1 Surround Speaker System question?

Ok i am ordering a logtech X-540 5.1 Surround Speaker System my sound card is a X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCIe but i dont know at ALL how to set up surround sound this will be my first surround sound speaker system so if anyone can tell me how to set it up it would be greatly appreciated

51speakersystem answers:

Ok, first off, you should have checked whether you had a 5.1 card or not. You do, but you might not have.

Second, your audio driver should be able to do this without a problem. Your system will come with one cable that has an orange, green, and black end. That goes from the PC to the woofer. Plug in the cable, and go into your audio driver. If it is a realtek driver, it will have a speaker configuration tab which lets you set what each output is sending. Just match the outputs to the inputs and it should work just fine.

EXAMPLE:

you plug the black end into the green port on the card, and set the green port in your driver for rear output. Then the black cable will output rear sound, and once you plug it into the correct port on your woofer, your rear speakers should work properly.

5.1 Speaker Systems With Optical Input

Daniel asks…

Good, high quality, optical input speaker systems?

I’m hoping to get some suggestions about good speaker systems. Currently looking into buying a speaker system for use in my home and dorm room. I plan to use it to play music, video games, movies, and general PC use. I would be alright with either a 2.1 or a 5.1 system. Price range anywhere from 600$ or lower (preferably lower, but not cheapo).

My PC and Xbox can both output in digital optical audio, and I would prefer to use them if at all possible. Cord management is a big deal when wiring these up in my dorm, and I’d like the added quality.

So far I have looked into the Bose Cinemate II Series

I can get the lesser model for 429$ where I live.

And I have briefly looked at the Logitech z5500, but have heard bad things about the music audio quality, so I’m skeptical of the price.

Any suggestions or input would be helpful. Thanks.

51speakersystem answers:

Avoid the Bose, they’re terrible… Bose is just high priced junk, and Logitech is ok. I can recommend an excellent 2.1 setup to you, but it will not utilize the optical inputs on your PC and Xbox. That said, trust me when I say it doesn’t make a real difference in most cases. I have used both Optical and Analog inputs, and it only matters if you are using a very high end system. If we’re talking speakers that are entry-level ($4000 and below) then you most likely will never notice a difference between optical and analog (RCA, or other).

Now that I got all of that down, I’ll recommend you look into this…

Suggested system: A pair of AudioEngine A2 powered speakers along with an Energy ESW-C8 subwoofer. The AudioEngines are small but powerful speakers, made in the USA, that I personally own and enjoy myself. The Energy sub is a great entry level sub that will assist the petite AudioEngines in rocking the house. Price: AudioEngine A2: $200… Energy Sub: $300…

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_732ESWC8/Energy-ESW-C8.html?tp=187

The AudioEngines would be connected to your XBOX or PC via RCA inputs, then you would take a 3.5mm/RCA cable to connect from the AudioEngine’s 3.5mm jack to the sub’s RCA jacks. Tada, excellent 2.1 system.

There are two reasons I’m choosing AudioEngine A2s as the speakers… One, they’re powered so you don’t need an amp, two, they’re outstanding speakers… Period. In your price range, you don’t have room to go for an amp and speakers and a sub… Doing so would leave you with sub-par sound. (Like what Bose would give)

The AudioEngine A2s will give you outstanding detail and clarity, and the Energy sub will give nice punch to the system.

Plain and simple, AudioEngine is made in the USA, Bose is made in China. Energy is a highly respected name and makes great entry-level subs… Bose just makes junk out of paper and foam.

Good luck, hopefully I helped.

Cheap speaker system with optical input?

It’s for use with my Xbox 360, and i just want surround sound at a low price (around £60 max). are there any speaker systems out there with an optical input for this price? alternatively, are there any other ways of getting 5.1 sound out of my xbox 360 using either a headphone-style jack or the Left and Right audio connectors that came with it? i’ve been looking at the Logitech x-540 system but will that connect to give me full surround sound? ive got a friend who bought a 5.1 system thats only outputting 2.1 because it wont connect properly so im a bit worried about forking out. thanks :D

51speakersystem answers:

Look for something that is 2.1 sound. You would come out cheaper. Go to best buy or walmart or target and see what computer speakers they have and use them. It would probably be your best bet if your in a small room. If your in a bigger room try finding a good shelf system with 3way speakers

5.1 Surround sound speaker system with optical in?

Im looking to buy a 5.1 surround sound system to use with both a PC and a PS3. Therefore the requirements are optical input, and 3 pc inputs.
I have looked at the Logitech Z 5500, but this is slightly outside of my price range. The Z 5400 seemed perfect but unfortunately, no where seems to sell them any more.
Are there any good alternatives to these systems for around the £100-£170 price mark that include the optical in?
Hi, Thanks for the response.
Was trying to look for a package that includes everything for sub £170. I know the Z 5400 would have if it was still sold, so I was going on the principle that something must have taken its place!

The PC is connected to a monitor already via DVI. The PC has onboard 7.1 sound card, and the requirement is to hook this up to the speakers, along with the PS3′s optical out.
@Robert W. Forgot to add, here in the uk, that AV reciever seems to be £200+, therefore busting my budget even before I get onto buying speakers.

51speakersystem answers:

I would suggest for Cyber Acoustics CA-5402, it features:

1. Convenient desktop control pod: on/off switch, master volume, bass volume, headphone output jack, aux in, and LED power indicator
2. Magnetically shielded satellite speakers
3. Acoustically balanced wood cabinet subwoofer; Bass reflex, ported enclosure on subwoofer
4. MP3 cradle (MP3 player not included)
5. Video game Y adapter cable included

And the price is only £44.83, well below your budget, however, I don’t know whether it is available at uk or not

Michael asks…

Is there ANYTHING that has an optical input and a surround sound output?

Surround sound output meaning an output to connect a 5.1 speaker system with speaker wires.

51speakersystem answers:

Yes, Home Theater Receivers and A/V Receivers do.
Most of them will have an Optical input, but not all.
The A/V Receiver will have DD 5.1 output to connect to speakers.
The Home Theater Receiver is available with and without speakers. When it comes with speakers it is called a Home Theater System or HTS-in-a-box.
Visit BestBuy.com and search for A/V Receivers and HTS.
I prefer the ones that have at least 2 optical inputs, one for the DVD player and one for the satellite Receiver.

Sound card optical out to home theater system plus pc speakers?

If I have a sound card that has 5.1 pc speaker input as well as optical out, can I connect the pc speakers along with connecting the optical out to a home theater system and that way use the home theater speakers along with the pc speakers at the same time?

51speakersystem answers:

I don’t know which sound card you have, but that should work fine.

Steven asks…

Convert optical audio to 6-channel analog?

I’m trying to find a relatively cheap solution to be able to plug my 360 and my pc into my 5.1 surround sound at the same time so I don’t have to constantly switch the cables all the time because they’re behind tons of stuff and it’s a big hassle. I have the Logitech X-530 speaker system. Although this speaker system does not have rca inputs on the back of the sub, I have a fix for that by using 1/8″ female-to-rca male adapters on each 1/8″ plug that normally plug into the computer. I just need a receiver or selector that has 6 rca outputs and preferably 2 optical inputs, or 1 optical and 1 coaxial. I could deal with only 1 optical, because there are adapters out there to connect multiple optical lines to a single one and just switch between them. So. What I need, is a receiver or selector that has 1 (or more) optical input, and 6 rca outputs. I have seen a surround sound speaker system for $70 that had exactly the kind of receiver I needed included, so I know there has to be a receiver of the likes out there somewhere on it’s own for sale, for less than $100. Thanks for any help.

51speakersystem answers:

Your best bet is probably to find a used surround amp with optical inputs and multi-channel pre-amp outputs (not uncommon as a pre-out block of RCA jacks or bridged RCA connectors on the back of medium-higher quality models). See the link for an idea of what to look for (the Pre-out block is shown at the upper center on an, admittedly, higher end model than you need).

Since your speakers have an amp built in you only need a low level signal to input to the X-530s … And this is provided by the pre-amp outputs of a surround receiver / amplifier. While you MAY find a dedicated converter (common ones are optical in but only stereo out) that will do this I suspect it would be at least as expensive as a used amp/receiver … Which should be readily found for under $100.

It’s a bit of a kludge since you end up wasting the power amp section of the amp and having to accommodate a large unit … But it would allow you to later upgrade to better speakers and sell the X-530s.

How to make 5.1 Channel Home Theater Speaker System at home?

I want to make a Hi Fi 5.1 Channel Home theater system with high bass. Please tell me which woofer and speakers i purchase and also how to make it.

51speakersystem answers:

Well – you can start with a subwoofer kit. Try the Dayton units from www.partsexpress.com

Those sites also sell kits and parts to make your own speakers if you want.

But you need to buy an AV Receiver. There is way too much electronics, software and stuff for you to build this yourself.

You can also search the internet for “DIY Speakers” for sites with lots of instructions and advice.

Most home theater in a box are not capable of connecting a dvd player to it. The only input you will find is for an optical audio. You can connect the dvd player directly to the tv using the HDMI cable and then with an optical cable connect it from the tv output to your home theater input. Hope this will help you out.;

Home Theater Speaker System Questions?

I want a new home theater system for my HDTV, but I have no experience with a speaker system and need some help.

What I want to do is have a speaker system hooked up to my HDTV somehow, so that I can use the entire surround sound system with WHATEVER is playing on my TV. For example, I have a PS3, Xbox360, PS2, etc. all hooked up to the HDTV. No matter what I’m playing or watching on the TV, I want to be able to use the speaker system. Even if Surround sound isn’t available for the source (like a ps2) then I at least want to be able use the speakers in mono or front stereo so I have the bass quality. The reason I say all of that is because I have heard on some DVD Home Theater Systems you can only use the speakers when watching that DVD player that came with the system.

This is the system I am looking at:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+1000W+5.1-Ch.+DVD+Home+Theater+System/9761447.p?id=1218168619879&skuId=9761447

On my HDTV, I have a digital optical audio out port, a regular audio port, and an HDMI port free to use for the speaker system. Here is a picture of my ports on my TV model:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B001U3Y8MW/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_1?ie=UTF8&index=1

Is it possible to achieve what I want with this system? If so, how would I do it and what would I need?

51speakersystem answers:

My answer is based on assuming all of the devices you wish to hear out of your home theater system are already hooked up to your HDTV.

Yes it is possible to do what you ask. What you would need to do is hook up the digital optical audio output of your HDTV to the digital optical audio input of the home theater system. This will pass all of the audio from the tv to your theater system.

HOWEVER there is one thing that will NOT happen if you do this – you will NOT get 5.1 surround sound for most devices that output 5.1 surround sound. I don’t know the reasoning behind this, but anything that has surround sound capability and is hooked up via HDMI to your tv will only output 2 channel stereo through the optical output of the tv. Anything you get via the tv tuner (ATSC and QAM) will be 5.1 surround sound.

So if you want surround sound from any of your equipment that has that capability you will have to route it to your home theater system instead.

I hope this helps you.

Joseph asks…

Should all the speakers on a home theater system emit sounds?

I have the Coby 5.1 Channel home theater speaker system. I hooked it up but I only hear sound from the front left and front right speakers. Should I be hearing sound from the center and surround left and right speakers as well?

51speakersystem answers:

All depends on what settings are on. There should be a button on the actual reciever and the remote to switch the different types of sound that could be played and what speakers are to be used. ALTHOUGH, the reason you may have all of the speakers activated and you only hear audio from the from front left, middle, and front right, is because the channel or movie that you are playing does not have 5.1 audio. Meaning only the front will work and possibly the back but it will play the exact same audio as the front only a lot quieter. Every movie is now made at least 5.1 so no worries with that. Television channels do not ALL include 5.1, but some may!

Hope that helped a little!

Nancy asks…

Can I connect a television to normal 2.1 and 5.1 speaker systems if the T.V. has a 3.5mm audio out socket?

I’ve been looking at answers to questions asking about connecting 5.1 speaker systems to televisions and video players.

I was surprised to find that, given the low prices which can be found for rewarding speaker systems, the answers suggest that you have to make sure you get a “pro logic receiver” as well.

The answers I have read say that, for example, a Hi. Def. television will connect to a 5.1 speaker system, but only through a pro logic receiver.

I’ve looked a bit for low priced pro logic receivers, and I was surprised to find that the very cheapest I can find is not far from 100 pounds.

So you buy a good enough, good priced 5.1 speaker system at 35 pounds, when you are not aware about needing the pro logic receiver, and realise that you must acutally pay 135 pounds for ‘cheap’ television theatre style speakers.

Is that roughly it, or am I mistaken?

Anyway, I thought that, if the 2.1 or 5.1 speaker system can connect by 3.5mm standard audio leads (I think all 2.1s do – also the audio connection standard of most MP3 player and portable compact disc player connections for output – speaker or headphone), you wouldn’t need a receiver. Is that right?

I am not worried just now about connecting a HD television, only non HD flat panel and old style televisions. Maybe HD televisions don’t have the 3.5mm audio out socket. But the televisions I am concerned with now do have this socket. And also, I am interested in if this is possible with a HD T.V. in the future.

It’s such an easy question (my main question), though it may seem complex above. Simply:

Can you forget about a “pro logic receiver” if the television and your speaker system, 2.1 or 5.1, can be connected together by the common 3.5mm socket audio cables?

And nearly finally – if it is normal to connect 5.1 speaker systems with a T.V. with the standard audio socket, is the sound quality as good as you’d want, selecting to have a theatre style surround sound system?

Or would connecting the T.V. and 5.1 speakers this way be vastly inferior to connecting a good 5.1 system, say a 70 watt sound output system to the television through a receiver?

[Also - do any T.V.s - HD TVs or not - have pro logic receivers built in - and if yes, are these generally more expensive models or is it a quite random thing?]

I’d really appreciate your help. I’m sure that good answers to these questions could really help a lot of really ignorant in this popular field, interested people like me. I can be quite slow, and I don’t doubt there are many like me when it comes to cables, socket sizes, T.V.s, videos, sound output, phono plugs, audio plugs, scart or not etc.
As far as I know, 3.5mm connections can be found on 5.1 systems, though aren’t standard through the speakers.

So, I’ve heard it suggested that 5.1 systems can be connected with 3.5mm plug end cables, by using the relevant RCA splitters and maybe one or more 3.5mm splitter would be required also.

These days, those adapters are easy to come by where I live (U.K.) in places like Maplin, also online shops.

But would it work O.K. soundwise?

I’m not sure about this – that it would give surround sound in respect of the speakers positioning. But not Dolby surround sound, or what people sometimes call “true surround” sound.

Is that right?

And is the quality of the 3.5mm connected, ampless surround sound likely to be reasonable, good, even very good?

51speakersystem answers:

Unless you are talking about a digital output 3.5mm, you are only going to get stereo sound. Digital 3.5mm are commonly found on computer sound cards. These types of outputs can output 5.1 sound.

As for your TV and receivers that have 3.5mm, they are most likely setup for stereo headphones.

If you want surround sound, connect video sources to your audio receiver via digital toslink or coax connection to give you Pro Logic, DTS, or Dolby Surround Sound. If you spend a little more money, use HDMI with an HDMI compatible audio receiver.

Don’t try to take shortcuts!!!

Joseph asks…

Do home theater systems work with just the TV and 5.1 speakers?

I have an LCD TV, an Xbox360 and a Bose Lifestyle® 25 Series II home theater system 5.1 surround sound. I just want to watch satellite TV in surround sound. Can I set up my speaker systems to my TV for surround sound? Or does it have to route through my xbox 360 and use it when I watch movies?

51speakersystem answers:

Your system will not accept a external DD input only 2 channel audio. The best you can hope for is pro logic sound, sorry.

Get rid of the Bose and get a new cheaper system, that will have way better sound and flexibility. Bose is overrated.

Better sound thru marketing!!

Speaker Systems: 2.1 vs 5.1 Channels?

I am trying to decide between a “really good” 2.1 speaker system or a 5.1 speaker system…

Any ideas? Reasons? ***Please be specific***

51speakersystem answers:

It would depend on your room. If you are in a dorm room or small apartment then a 2.1 system is fine. If you are trying to get sound to a large room then a 5.1 system would fit your needs better.

Consider your needs relative to the sound of your room. The decision is yours.

Review Of 2 Logitech 5.1 Speaker Systems

The  Z-5500 Logitech 5.1 And The X-540 Logitech 5.1 Personal Computer Sound Systems. Logitech is famous for the quality of their huge range of devices which support computers like speakers, mice, keyboards, webcams, sound-cards, USB microphones, and many more computer accessories. Logitech speakers are powerful and will fill your computer life with great sounding movies, games and music. Logitech 5.1 speaker systems are small, this makes them great computer speakers. Small and powerful is a good combination, they sound great but do not take up much space in your room. Many people are surprised by the strong, powerful sound that comes from Logitech speakers. In this article I will cover two of the Logitech systems that I like.

The Z-5500 Logitech 5.1

Z-5500 Logitech 5.1

Lets start with the Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System. This system is powerful with 5 speakers and a woofer at 505 Watts of total power. You do not need a receiver with these speakers, so you can directly plug in your computer, DVD player, TV, MP3 player, or gaming system and it will sound great.

A few years ago a friend bought this system. I wanted to try it out and he let me plug my laptop in. I listened to Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin, Cream, some classical music, and then we watched Master and Commander. It all sounded excellent. The highs are really clear and the base is deep. The Z-5500 sounds clear when I turned it up louder than you can stand. I think the Logitech Z-5500 is the absolute best computer speaker system available at any price.

The X-540 Logitech 5.1

Logitech 5.1 X-540

A step down from the Z-5500 but still a great sounding 5.1 system is the Logitech X-540 with 140 Watts of total power. If you are trying start off modest and economical but nonetheless desire a 5.1 system, the X-530 may be the perfect personal computer sound system for you.The Z-5500 uses a technology called Frequency Directed Dual Driver, to produce a uniform sound field evenly around the room. This way the sound is great no matter where in the room the listener is.

At this price range they are the best I’ve ever heard. These speakers get loud and still sound clear. I like to turn up the volume, and I hear lots of great sound systems. The Logitech X-540 sounds even better loud than some of the larger speakers I hear. If you’re on a budget but you still want a 5.1 system you can turn up without distortion then this may be the speakers for you. Great sound for such a affordable system.
